Big bore legal requirements with dvla

Total noob

I bought a 650 Continental which, I am told, has been bored to 865. I need to tell dvla but am not sure what details to put in. I don't have a clue as to the date it was done - the v5c asks this. Any ideas girls?

Don't ask/Don't tell seemed to work quite well in many venues, do they already know the work has been done?

Drop us a few lines in the New Members section, I'm sure your experience will be of interest to many of us.

PO of my 88" Harley installed a 95" big-bore kit three years before I bought the bike (that is, fourteen years ago). He never updated the paperwork with the state or the insurance company. Nor did I. Since taxes and fees are not based on displacement I doubt the state cares. But this is the USA, not the UK.

In the UK it would also change the catagory from A2 to A with possible licencing implications, insurance etc.

I don't believe it's a complex procedure to notify the DVLA of V5C changes, for peace of mind I think I'd rather do it.

Just looked it up... you just need to provide one of these 4

Engine Number or Cylinder Capacity

If you change a vehicle engine number or cylinder capacity you must provide one of the following:

  • A valid receipt for the replacement engine.
  • Written evidence supplied by the manufacturer.
  • An inspection report produced for vehicle insurance purposes.
  • Written confirmation from a garage (authenticating that a change happened before you bought it).
