Bullet 500 Electra x Amal carb

Finally made it
Location

My Electra x is fitted with a Amal 932 carb
Should the air (mixture) screw be 1 1/2 turns out as a
starting point? Being a lean burn engine?
Because I get it started and after a while it seems to get sooted up and not start again.
I did notice , it's fitted with a 107 needle jet instead of 106.
Should I change the needle jet or turn out the air screw to make it lean?
The carb has been thoroughly cleaned out to make sure the jets/passages are clear.
If anyone else has a similar bike/carb , how many turns out are they on the air screw?
I just need other members experience of this sort of problem.
Thanks in advance.

Just saw this.
I ran about 2-2.5 turns out on my BSA's Amal 932, IIRC. Set it to the smoothest idle when hot. Then wick the throttle to about half throttle and see how it responds.
The 932, unless you get a newer, "premier" type, the pilot circuit is fixed and can't be changed by jetting. I finally got tired of it and put on a Keihiin PWK (much to the chagrin of the BSA Purists ;)).
Also, the pilot circuit has a sharp 90 degree bend in it that's almost impossible to clean once clogged. It's good you got yours cleaned out. Usually it takes a drill and new hole, then a plug.
Is there any scarring on the slide? They like to warp with heat. That can also effect how it runs.
