Yes, I've seen the post. What everyone forgets or doesn't know is the fact that it's not all about airflow. You want plenty of airflow capacity but that's only part of the story. I was a tech & engine design & development engineer for 18 years. The intake & exhaust are finely tuned to create an airflow pulse during the induction & exhaust cycles. This pulse is active during valve overlap allowing the best full charge to enter the cylinder while aiding scavenging of the exhaust gases. This airflow pulse in itself doesn't just use the airflow, it uses sound too. Alterations to the exhaust & induction can really upset things if done incorrectly.A few months ago someone in this forum (maybe someone here can remember who) posted a mathematical analysis of the J350 full intake path including intake air volume at full RPM. It showed that the stock air box snorkel was more than adequate for that engine. It would follow that it is also adequate for the RE 650 twin intake timing. It was enough to convince me that there would be no performance gain with the free flow air box cover.
That's interesting. I know some old two-stroke bikes used an expansion chamber in the exhaust. Is that related to the sound component you mentioned? On the intake side it seems that the DNA filter and free-flow filter cover aren't really tuned devices so could you expand a little how the sound plays in aiding the intake pulse? This airflow pulse in itself doesn't just use the airflow, it uses sound too. Alterations to the exhaust & induction can really upset things if done incorrectly.
There is no Hitchcocks dyno test on just the high flow cover with the OEM filter, I wonder if it had been omitted on purpose?Yes, I've seen the post. The Hitchcock's video that I've seen with just the induction DNA filter & snorkel cover actually produced a 1.7hp increase at the REAR WHEEL. That translates to 2.2hp at the crank. That's a worthwhile increase in my book. That was on a new 'J' series 350 Meteor.
I didn't say it was the OEM filter. It's the full DNA filter. There is no Hitchcocks dyno test on just the high flow cover with the OEM filter, I wonder if it had been omitted on purpose?

My point exactly, so it's a promotion of the DNA filter that they sell.I didn't say it was the OEM filter. It's the full DNA filter.
Bear in mind it isn't just about the air. It's been tested & tuned to affect the whole induction process & enhance the pulse. It doesn't matter if you disagree. It works & you can test it yourself to prove it.Waiting for a cheaper option, at this stage I don't think my engine needs more air.
Displacement maybe but it has a Combustion chamber like a Lawn mower and small valves as well.
Nice Torque curve but.
