First Moto Camping Trip

I have my first camping trip upcoming and I’m just trying to mitigate any problems now. I went with a Wingman Goose tent, have a flat pack camp stove as well as a hatchet and magnesium block for my fuel and fire needs. Water is more problematic. I plan to take 2 gal. in the Bags and another on my back in a camel back. I’m packing a water filter to replenish. Garlic and onion are easy to carry but fresh and frozens not so much. I will start with frozen meats and a cold brick but unless I can find farm fresh eggs I’m not sure how they’ll do over 3 days with the heat we’re dealing with.

Does anyone carry motor oil or brake fluid on their camping trips? Any other helpful suggestions?

I like to keep it light. Freeze-dried food, Clif bars, nuts, and dried fruit.


Motor oil 1/2 qt or so.

Note pad. Gotta have a note pad to write down things to like/ dislike/ loose/ gain/ improve/ do different for next trip.

Is there a preferred container to carry oil in or would something like a squeeze bottle do? Pad of paper already in my tank bag! Just thought about a kick stand pad. I’ll have dried fruits and nuts. Feel free to drop suggestions as the come to mind.

Nothing wrong with the bottle the oil comes in.
A soup can with both ends cut out and crushed flat makes a nice "Lilly pad" to stop the kick stand from sinking in on soft ground. They're cheap or free, recyclable, biodegradable and fit in a jacket pocket.

a pot holder, if your cooking pot doesn't have an insulated handle. a good book to read, a small lantern or head lamp. and last but not least, a good alcoholic beverage to encourage sleepiness. counting sheep doesn't work for me. discovered all this on my "first" camping trip a few weeks back. planning another trip, now that the weather has cooled off a little.

Nothing better than watching the sunset while reflecting on things and sipping a liquid of choice is there ?
Watching the sunrise while sipping coffe is the other fave.

I tried to find a skillet like the one included in the Wingman Road Kitchen which has a 3 pronged removable handle but I literally can’t find one so my small cast iron skillet is coming. Good call on the potholder. The kindle and a bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon are on the list. Picking up a headlamp tomorrow and perhaps a small led lantern. All the while reminding myself that all I have is 2 saddle bags and my backpack to fit it all in!

To help conserve drinking water pack some type of handi-wipe or umscented baby wipe for personal cleaning tasks. (Hoo Ahhs)

I was reminded today that I come from a time before everyone had a super computer in hand. Smart phones are handy only as long as they have power. If your bike is not set up for charging electronics take a battery pack and appropriate charging cables.

I also like to have an actual map of areas being traveled and a compass. I do have a dedicated GPS (old Garmin Legend HCx) but really only use it track where I have been.

I bought a Dane military surplus fuel bottle holds a liter of gas, a Harley tool roll for xtra tools. Headlamp. A Glock 81 field knifes. This fits on one side of surplus Romanian saddle bags. The other side has a combo east german canteen cook set . A knife fork spoon combo and I use a 1955 small Swiss pack with front pouch that holds wet wipes and a folded waterproof sheet and paracord too build a rain shelter I secured a old mosin nagant ammo pouch too grab handle with fire makeing fixings in it. The main pouch Carries Rations. And a flask of wine , beers and ice.

The Meteor does have a usb charge port but I also have a 20Ah and 12Ah backup. Being a HAM I’ll have my HT though I’m considering a QRT rig. The paper map is a good call. I’ll also download the area to my phone and iPad for off line use.
