Update: The only blue connector I find is under the tank and I thought that was for the gas gauge sending unit. So I fiddled around looking for another blue connector, made sure all the connectors I came across were seated properly, didn't find one and decided that was enough mechanickin' for one day and it was time to ride. Buttoned everything up, lit the fire and voilé, the gear indicator works like new. Maybe Mary Baker Eddy was onto something.

I would like to have the black zip tie concession for Royal Enfield, though.
Well I've had the tank off a few times when I laid some wires for my charger and LED spots, so maybe I've pulled a connector along the way. I'll likely leave it until the 3k service.
Apparently in the process of cleaning the screen and re-install, the rubber gasket got pinched, a piece broke away, made it to the sensor
I don't understand this, what rubber gasket are you talking about, can you be more specific?

When disconnecting the battery seeking a reset of the ECU it is a good idea to short the + and - terminals together. Of course, after disconnecting the battery. This will aid in the discharge of any residual capacitive energy that may be held within the circuits.

sorry for the late reply
I can only relay what was explained to me by the tech at the dealership....apparently, when I was changing the O/F, the debris screen at the oil dump, got pinched, and a piece of the rubber gasket on said screen broke loose and went on a tour , finding a home around the sensor. They found a small ball of junk there...they cleaned it up and it works as advertised. I have no reason to doubt them at this point. If it goes bad again, then we'll look elsewhere....best of luck

FWIW, I did have the gear indicator get sketchy once. I disconnected both ends of the cable, checked their condition, and reinstalled them. The problem cleared. I suspect the connector at the gauge cluster was was not properly seated.

Disconnecting the battery also solved a problem I had with the compass. After a gentle drop once, the compass went into Calibrate mode and refused to reset despite my riding figures of eight for ages. I disconnected the battery for a minute and when I re-connected, voila, working compass (think I posted that somewhere else on this forum a while back). I didn't try shorting the + and - terminals while I was disconnected - this sounds sensible and scary at the same time - however, it's akin to a computer (I'm a PC tech by trade), having disconnected the power lead from a PC, pressing the power button flushes the power from the capacitors which can cure some hardware ills on occasion.

The gear indicator stopped working a while ago, apart from 0 for neutral it just shows a dash for the rest of the gears. Anyone know where the sensor is located? I don't want to change the clock unit as I've managed to stop the condensation issue. The gear indicator isn't that important to me (I know most times what gear I'm in), but if there's a fix I'll do it just in case I sell it at some point.
Same with mine, disconnected the battery for one minute and then it worked again :)
