Him Service Kits in Canada/USA

SilverCycle

Well travelled
Hi, a question for those blessed with living in the west...

I'm currently touring with my wife, on our Himalayans, in Canada, and will be arriving at a relative's place in a week or three. I'd like to order a couple of service kits, to be there for us. But I'm finding it hard to see a CA or USA mail order supplier.

I tried the contact forms on a couple of shops in the city, one an RE dealer, but haven't yet heard back (possibly I am impatient, two days of weekend are interposed).

Any suggestions as to supplier?

I'm just after the oil filter & gasket for the mesh cover, maybe air filters, and the oil drain washer, and a spark plug (which could be separate, although I don't have the spec to hand). Oil 15w50 I presume I can pick up locally, although I'm unsure about disposal.

22 and 23 models, target city Edmonton.

Issue will repeat later, as we head south across the USA.

Cheers
Gideon

Sounds like a great trip!

15w50 is an unusual oil - I wouldn't rely on being able to pick it up locally. It also has to be synthetic or semi-synthetic, not a general motor oil as the clutch sits in it. (Decent write up here)

Hitchcocks do service kits and apparently are good about shipping to the US, or you could order the parts directly from India through ebay. It's often cheap enough that you can order essential bits twice from different Indian suppliers for the same cost, if you're unsure about them arriving - although I've had no issues so far.

Air filters IME last a long time before needing replacement, but obviously if you've been riding in dusty areas or have cleaned them out already multiple times that might be sensible. Plugs are a sensible service item - many choose the iridium plug (I fitted the NGX Iridium, CR8EIX No. 4218) and it's fine. Should last longer than a normal, but I haven't found any other improvements. (There's a lot of folk claiming better performance or economy for these, all of which I'm quite skeptical of. It is just a thing that makes a spark, it just doesn't erode as quickly) Keep one of your old ones with your bike kit as a spare.

If time could you get it shipped from UK, cost of parts fairly low. Or do you already have some in your garage and send? Not sure what postage cost or guaranteed delivery time?
Hope you find a solution.

Thanks Folks! I've currently got a partial solution as I'm passing a local dealer soon. Plus diag cables from Amazon (China shipping though) and a Givi part from a Canadian dealer.

Think I'll accumulate a stock of service items.

Yamaha Whitehorse dealer had the 15w50 branded as Husky ($$$), although so far only top up qty.

Follow-up. Alberta Cycle had the oil service parts and oil. Solved.

So 6 weeks later, in Arizona, I'm worrying about it again (6,000 miles passes quickly on tour). We figure out Reno, NV, will be about our service due point. EuroCycle were responsive to emails (unusual, IME, for a moto dealer), and had the oil service parts, albeit the weekend crew could not source the strainer oring. We'd also picked up one spare at BearsTooth in Billings. It does seem that the simple service parts are held at the RE dealers.

However, at 12,000 miles, our RE chains are dying. No surprise. Turns out chains and sprockets are not held, at least not this dealer, and come directly, but unpredictability, from India. Bit of a bummer, it's not like 12,000 miles is hjgh mileage, it's routine. We may have to loop out and back to collect. I'd have preferred an aftermarket chain anyway. Need to get better at telephoning, not emailing, non franchised bike dealers!

...and, unrelated... For oil change, RE supply a kit with a copper crush washer for the drain bung, sometimes a custom oring for the strainer cover, and... three aluminium washers.

For what purpose are the latter? There's three bolts on the filter cover, but no such washers there (2022, 2023, and Hitchcock's picture of 2018).

Sounds like a great trip. Any pics?

Definitely go sprockets & chain like DID 525VX3 and sprockets Esjot 15/38 if keeping bike standard gearing etc. in my opinion. Standard chain/sprockets are ok but budget.

Correction: The Labor weekend cover staff said the above, but today the regular parts staff (Hi Nicole!) advised that the like of chains and sprockets should normally come from stock held in Wisconsin, although it is not possible to tell on the RE stock control system where any particular order comes from. So fingers crossed, might be quite quick.
