Hitchcock's Luggage Panel

Napom

Well travelled
Location
Northern VA
I saw this on Hitchcock's site, and since I already had some things in my cart and was paying for shipping already, why not give it a shot. I think it will turn out to be one of the best impulse buys ever! The panel is a quick and direct swap out for the pilion seat. I will likely never have a passenger on Jipci, so that seat space is wasted. My travel plans have me strapping a dry bag across the bike from saddle bag to saddle bag, and this frees up all the room that was taken up by the seat. Right now it is perfect for my IFAK/Trauma kit. I may beef up the kit a bit or add some tools there because I definitely have the room. Unused space now used - PERFECT!!!

Hi, would you happen to know what the weight carrying limit of each pannier is please? I know they are around 26 litres in volume but I just need to find out roughly how much weight they can carry. Cheers :)

26 liter as listed by RE is kind of a misnomer. That's the volume of the panier bodies only. Add the volume of the lids the total rises to 30 liters. I measured this using water and a 1,000 ml graduated cylinder.

Since it says in the instruction manual that 5kg's is the maximum weight limit, it must leave many people pondering what exactly they could take with them on their journey that's under 5kg per pannier. What if anything could be as large as 26 litres in volume and weigh less than 5kgs!? Makes me wonder why then they make the panniers as large as they do.

£43, not a bad price I guess, but I simply removed the cover and foam from the rear seat and screwed on a flexible kitchen cutting board, cut to size. Total cost £2.

Hi, thanks for the post..
Did you cut the panel at the front end? I also bought one but found that it's not stable and look different from the one you post

On the pannier content weight limit, I’ve done thousands of miles with 10 - 12 kg in each pannier without any issues - plus another 15kg on top of them - just keep an eye on the frames for any signs of stress. (I’m too old to travel light and like my comfort these days)
I have replaced all of the mounting bolts with higher rated (12.9iirc) ones, as both of the top ones sheared (with empty panniers) on the first run out after fitting the frames, despite spending hours tweaking them to fit without any pre stress.
As mentioned, 5kg is probably lawyer speak.

I searched all over their website, to no avail. Care to share where you found it or a part number?
I just called Cara and told her what I wanted. So far they have had all the same stuff as Hitchcock does, with no tariff. She does an amazing job and is way more effective to talk to than trying to use their web store.

That rear rack appears to be the original one from the RE Himalayan Euro4.

I'm sorry to say that it isn't very sturdy, and if you load weight into the box, it's going to end up breaking due to the vibrations.
I know of several cases where people had to reinforce it with welds after it broke.
In my case, I bought a part sold by Givi that distributes the weight between the original mount and the Givi mount (givi SR9050), thereby reinforcing the entire assembly.

A cheaper solution might be to replace the original bracket with a stronger one.
