Let's talk stalling...

How often does your bike stall?

  • My bike never stalls

  • My bike used to stall when first ridden, but doesn't now that I have more miles on it

  • My bike stalls when first ridden but is fine once its been running a few minutes

  • My bike stalls whenever the mood strikes

  • My bike stalls when cold unless I rev it up, until its warm

Did you find the irridium plugs helped the bike all around or only for starting and idling?
I'd start with the plug, as it's an easy fix if it works for you (it didn't for me). Next try the hose fix as detailed in the video. What worked for me was to check my valve clearances, which were both tight. Adjusting them transformed the bike. It hasn't stalled once since then and it idles nicely at all times.

Isn't it funny we're all talking about the same make and same model but everybody has a different experience in fixing it. I find that humorous. some things work for some people other things don't work for other people. Maybe something the factory should take care of before it rolls out just my opinion

So I have a question about stalling. Does your bike do it? Mine does, for the first few minutes I ride it. It idles fine but often when taking off from a stop it will stall for the first few minutes. The only way to avoid this is to let it run for a minute or two before taking off. Am I alone, or does yours do this too? I am trying to get a feel if this is a normal thing or an issue. The idle is about 1100/1200 when cold. It doesn't matter if the bike is hot or cold, it will be touchy and sometimes stall when I give it throttle from a stop, until its been ridden a bit. Mine has 400 miles on it. Thanks for your input!
So now what. Just purchase a 2019 and put 40 miles on it and it stall twice. Not happy. Both stalls were at low rpm’s just accelerating. I am 250 miles from dealer and he wants to come up and make some adjustment but at this time I am not sure I want this bike. Sounds like this is an ongoing problem with this bike. Return bike or will it get better ????

Hmm, how far off idle were you when it stalled?. Was the bike warmed up before riding off?.

If the dealer is willing to come that distance at no cost to you, then let them. Discuss how you feel calmly and see what they will do for you. My feeling is that the biggest problem with this bike (probably most Enfields) is QA at the factory. A lot seem to come out, out of "spec" as it were and need some fettling to get right. That can be a number of things, valve clearances, plug changes, checking hoses, loose connectors etc. This is stuff one could argue the dealer should check as part of prep. But if they did the prep cost would be exorbitant. Yeah, RE need to lift there game here definitely. I almost got an old carbed version due to concerns re the EFI version. But if wanted an old school carbed bike I would have got a DR650.

Mine has very few Km's on it and likes to stall when warming up, got to the keep revs up . Idle is very lumpy until warm. It reminds me very much of a carbed bike. I read that these run quite lean down low. Plus they also have a fairly rudimentary EFI system.
Try an Iridium plug and see how it goes?. I going to try one on mine to see if it idles better cold.

Hello, if it was me I would just stick it out. Believe it or not despite all its little corks this bike is a great dual sport / adventure motorcycle. My suggestion would be to start at the beginning of this thread and see what other people have done and judge whether or not that's what you need to do.
Myself, I would start with the cheapest and work my way up to the most expensive fix. Like I have said before in this fourum, I had similar problems but after replacing the spark plug and running 89 octane gas my bike runs better than it ever has. Other people have found other things that work for them. No, this bike is not perfect. You will have to tinker, probably not what you wanted to hear after buying a brand new motorcycle.
I think the reason why I take this with a grain of salt is because I own other motorcycles (3 Urals) that have needed a fix right from the factory.
The plus side is that you have found a great forum and a great bunch of people to help you get going.

I might question the condition of the gas. Your 2019 model might contain 2019 gas, or even 2018 gas depending on how long it's been at the dealer. Add some Sea Foam or Marvel Mystery Oil, go for a long ride, and then fill the tank with Ethanol free gas. See what that does.

And I agree with others, the bike only gets better the more you ride it. Start it up, let it idle while you don your gear and then don't baby it.

A quarter turn on the idle adjustment screw might be all it needs.

This is no Japanese bike... it's going to require more attention and tweaking. I can't just get on this bike and ride, and then never think about it the way I do with my Suzuki. If that is not something you're willing to give time to (and I wouldn't blame you), then yes, it might be that this is not the bike for you. Best to trade it in now and get the bulk of your money back. Better to consider a Honda CB500X or a Kawasaki Versys X-300.

If this stalling is your only problem with the bike, it's worth persevering - put an Iridium plug in and always leave the engine idling for a minute or two before you start riding. I've had 4 or 5 stalls in 6 months of riding but I can put most of them down to a problem with the interface between the clutch lever and the throttle...!
My Iridium plug has made the engine much smoother but it's only new so cannot say if it has eliminated any stalls.

I picked up a 2020 on 7-3. I have about 650 miles on it now and have had it stall on me when it reaches below half a tank of fuel. I vented the gas tank and it helped the first time, but not after. It will go about a mile to two miles and it will happen again. When I put more fuel in it, it will run fine. So I decided to look at the fuel filter. I took off the tank and removed the pump. I took the pump apart and found a lot of black crud in the housing as well as the tank. My fuel filter was pretty much all black with that crud. I cleaned out the filter. First I sprayed it with carb cleaner which worked OK. It was better when I submerged the filter in soapy water and could let the water fill the inside of the filter. Then I massaged the filter so the water could stir up the crud from inside the filter and push out the filter outlet to the pump inlet.

After I had it looking like the white plastic sock again I put it all back together. I put about a quarter of a tank of fuel in and it started and ran. (It will start easier if you wait for the filter to dry.) So far so good. I plan to take it for a longer ride after work.

I think that when the tank got below half the crud would sift to the inlet to the pump. I found out that you are not supposed to take it apart when I tried to order a fuel filter. Apparently if you need a fuel filter you have to buy the whole pump assembly. If anyone has questions just ask or if you know where to buy just the filter please let me know. I may have this all wrong.

Take care.

Twice in a row now I've been quite low on fuel before I've filled up (well into the red zone) but not noticed any stalling - yet! Not sure I fancy the DIY tank and pump cleaning procedure you describe (but thanks for the info) so keeping my fingers crossed that I have a clean tank...

Just an update. Everything is working well. I went out for about 50 miles and then filled up. So far no more stalling and a smoother idle. I will see if anything changes.

Got to add a +1 for the Iridium plug.
Was a bugger to start and hold idle when I first got the bike. Changed to Iridium, adjusted the idle as it was too high and really erratic, maybe was too lean. Now don't need the "fast idle" lever either as it makes it worse. A bit of throttle for 30secs and then leave it chugging at 1200 rpm till warm. So far no stalling issues once underway either. If tis keeps up I may not bother with adding a fuel controller.

Did you have to gap the plug?

Nope, decided to just stick it in. It looked close anyway. One thing I did note was that I must have not pushed the cap down properly and it was loose. It still ran and I didn't noticel any misses or anything, but it did bring up the MIL. Reseated it and it went away. Never did look at the code.

Still starts fine and idles away easily with minimal input. Still running in so hopefully will just get better.

Yeah actually got a couple of these NGK iridium plugs as well and the factory gap is around 0.75mm which is in the range of what spark plug gap is mentioned in the factory manual (0.7-0.8mm). So they should be good!

Put mine in yesterday evening and so far it idles fine, was even able to get the fuel enricher knob to work (first time in 9k miles haha). It definitely sounds more alive, will try and take it for a ride and see if I can feel more improvements.

I bought a new 2020 himalayan about 8 months ago and have 6700 kms on the bike. Stalling was an issue from day one. The bike ran a little rough when cold and the typical stall would happen when pulling up to a stop sign. Throttle down and pull in the clutch and it would stall. I eventually learned to compensate most of the time but it continued to be an annoyance and often a safety concern. I tried the ngk plug. No change. Checked for pinched tubes. Ditto. Cleaned the fuel filter. Ditto. A week ago I removed the charcoal evap cannister and routed the one tube remaining from the throttle body to the tank as shown and discussed by others. That was the problem at least for my bike. There was a very noticeable change. The bike starts easier and no longer stalls. It has more power and runs smooth during the warm up period. I suspect it was being starved for fuel with the evap system in place. I thought I'd throw in my two bits in case anyone is still scratching their head over a stalling issue.

OK... sorry for being thick, but I need a bit more clarity regarding the hoses coming off the EVAP and what to do with them. One hose (I think the one routed toward the front of the bike and coming off the front of the EVAP canister), is just the tank's breather hose which I think can just be discarded? And then there is the hose routed about mid-bike that goes up to the throttle body, (think it comes off the back of the EVAP canister?). So what should be done with that hose?
