Morning ride to the Veterans Memorial in the shadow of Mt. Shasta

The air was cool this morning as I headed toward the south end of the Shasta Valley. The stark beauty of the rocky chaparral and juniper stands glowed warmly in the light of the rising sun. The Veterans Memorial, just off the Volcanic Scenic Highway, is a special place I like to visit whenever I get the chance. It is a sculpture garden, dedicated to all veterans, set in a lonely landscape of wind twisted trees and sage brush. Sheep Rock, Whale's Back, and Mt. Shasta make a stunning backdrop. The Wall of Names fills me with a sense of awe and humility.

Getting there...
Thanks for the pics and the write-up! That is such a beautiful area. Just a bit too far away from me at the moment but I do pass through there when I head back home to Washington in the fall. Stories like yours inspire me to find new areas to ride. Finding beautiful areas in Southern California is a bit difficult though. Nice looking bike!

Awesome! Shasta is a destination in my books for sure and I have a few friends in that area. One of my bucket list rides is going from Shasta to Bend. Beautiful shot of the mountain BTW, great looking meteor too - (y)(y)

Thanks for the link, I did not know there is a web site for the memorial. I went for a ride today in search of the perfect burger. First, I stopped in Calahan for a cold one at the Calahan Emporium. I met a couple there from Oregon who were day cruising on their bikes. I continued on to Etna where I found near perfection at Dottie's. It doesn't get much better than a Dottie's burger with fries and a Coke. 🤩

Calahan and Etna? We're close. If you ever want to meet up, let me know. I'm just outside of Medford. Hwy 96, Cecilville, lots of great roads nearby. I rode to Bend to the RE dealer there, lots of bikes, got an oil filter and look around. I rode the Vstrom though, more legroom, wind protection, and a Day Long seat for 400 miles round trip.20220813_160319.jpg
