New 2022 Interceptor. Downtown Drag

Hi again! Well, my original plan went totally sideways, gang. The original plan was like all my other bikes. Break it in stock, then bling it up after the first oil change. Then? The weather never let up (still).....parts kept coming in and landing on my work bench....and then snow, rain, horizontal winds, etc. In short, no break-in rides....or riding of any kind......but the parts and bling kept piling up. I couldn't take it anymore.

So, Grip Puppies, bar risers, and short tinted fly screen went on. Then more days went by doing nothing but watching the weather. I'm feeling good at this point because at least I'm steering clear of the performance parts. The motor is still stock.

In an effort to deal with the Downtown Drag matte finish tank (the wife loves the matte finish and teal stripe), I added door stripping to the big seam under the tank to break up where the black/grey and lack of teal stripe meet, rubber knee pads, and a black leather tank strap. This really helped.

Then went on the "small" black engine guards, and the factory skid plate. I was happy. Engine was still stock for break-in, but headway was happening, in spite of the weather.

Again, snow, rain. I caved. I was weak. On went the DNA filter kit, and polished Powerage Shorty's. I was a defeated man. :cautious:

Then one afternoon, Mrs. 2LZ and her friend (a decorator) were checking the bike out over a bottle of wine....and they both decided that the Downtown Drag tank and the stock side covers, just weren't working together. Gloss vs. matte, and far too many different colors involved. So, they agreed that Trip Machine Wingman bags were the answer. WOO HOO! Happy wife, happy life, right???!!! ;)

So here ya go. My plan went to crap, but the bike is done....and still only has 45 miles on it.
Can't wait for this weather to break........

Congrats! When one's main 'fix' is not available, alternatives suffice for a while. 😉

Did you get 'bags' for both sides? Do you keep the side covers installed? What do you do to protect them from scuffing? Don't you hate all these questions?

Love the questions! I got the set, both sides. The bags and mounting hardware replace the side covers, so the stock side covers on the shelf now. Uncle Stu (stuart fillingham) has a great video on these bags and installation. The bags come treated for most weather from the factory, though of course there are care instructions. They also hold more than they appear. My neighbor was able to put five full cans of beer in each bag!

Nice,
which bar risers did you go with, I've been looking for some up and back for mine.
I went with these. Reasonably priced, fit perfectly and put me more prone and off my elbows and wrists.

I've been ordering most of my stuff thru "Royalenfieldking". It's all Ebay, but the REking site puts it all in one place. Also, they package stuff together. I ordered the fly screen, bash plate, rear rack, and small black engine guards together at a small discount. So far, I'm happy with them.

Why did you do that?

I hadn't noticed that the tank was matt and the side panels are gloss - it'll be like the "your welcome" song from Moana going around and around in my head until I do something about it

Which "that"? I did a lot. The door stripping on the bottom seam? It needed something there. The teal stripe fell short of the seam where the black and grey came together. Looked totally unfinished. If it would have been a bright color (my preference was the Orange Crush) or chrome, I would have left it be.... That "that"?

Thanks ! I should have asked, any cable rerouting or difficulty ?

Why did you point out that the tank was matt and the side panels are gloss - can't unsee that now. Mine is the same downtown drag colour

OHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!! Yah....it was a mental quandary, for sure. It bugged me some, but once the ladies started having issues with it, that's all it took. I honestly can't understand why the factory did it. If you're going to matte the tank, matte the side covers!!!! Plus.....the red/gold/white on the side covers doesn't even come close to the DD tank. Fashion Faux Pa!

Had to Google that one.
Really does make me smile in a cynical sort of way.
I get the impression of a load of octogenarians sitting in a public building (town hall?) thinking how do we put the world to rights - lets ignore poverty, injustice, health issues, wars - lets pick on someone who looks different, that'll make the world a better place.

Doesn't have to be the USA I bet most countries are run by busy-bodies with a very narrow (focused?) view of how the world should be.

Honestly, regarding the color choices by RE for the DD motif, (we could take the name way off the rails ;) ), I sat and stared long and hard at this bike in my shop, over multiple cheap cans of beer, when I first brought it home two weeks ago. Not that I'm any better with colors than your average guy, but I kept looking at both the tank and side cover. Thoughts arose as the Miller Lite's went down.

I guess I get the matte/satin finish. Many do it.....but why the teal stripe? A simple red or gold sticker would have matched the side cover! Problem solved! I first thought of peeling the teal sticker and replacing it with the badge (like on the Orange Crush, etc)....but it appears to have been satin clear coated. No-go.

I get the glossy side cover. Mass production. They use it on every Interceptor and Continental....but if you're going to make the ONE EXCEPTION, on this bike, toss the side covers in the same paint booth! Right?

Why the five different colors? Mrs. 2LZ has to check my clothes out when I leave the house so I don't embarrass her....and I could see this wasn't quite right!
Long story short, I got a fantastic discount because these weren't leaving the floor. I'll deal with it!

A bit like my "choice" , I got a black used Interceptor in Reno last summer. My last black bike was an 07 Vstrom 1000, at the dealer, a left-over I bought in 08 at great discount. When I buy new or order up a bike I usually go for the brightest color available that year. I saved several thousand $ buying used with 4500 miles though, so I don't mind the black at all.

Funny that you mentioned that your wife likes the matte finish on the tank. I had a matte blue CB300R that we bought with the intention of it being her first bike. She loved it. But turns out that she just loved the matte finish on it. Matte isn't my favorite - I am a detailer, and once you scuff a matte finish, you can't do anything with it, unlike a gloss finish, where imperfections can be buffed out. When she never rode it, and it was really too small for me, I sold it to buy an Interceptor. We were looking at new ones in the showroom, and she saw the Downtown Drag and said "Ooh, matte, I love it!" I told her I'd buy whatever was clean, cheap and used, which turned out to be Orange.

At least new gas tanks are pretty cheap for these bikes, so if you change your mind, you can always change it.

Indeed. Before I did anything to the bike, I was already online looking at a glitter tank (serious old school look) and polished fenders. Inexpensive enough, for sure....but then the gals weighed in. Heck, at this point I'm ready to ride it! 32' this morniing and some snow on the ground still. Grrrrrrrrr.............

Out of curiousity, does ANYONE have any idea what the matte/satin grey color on the front of the tank may be listed as? I'd love to paint the headlight ears and front fender mount the same grey. Any info would help. Beats carrying my tank into Walmart to match caps:giggle:.....

Not sure, but Rustoleum makes a pretty comprehensive line of medium to dark metallic greys. I have most of them for different trim projects on cars and household pieces. If you went to Lowes or Home Depot, you can no doubt find something that is pretty close. You're trying to match to parts that aren't immediately adjacent to the tank, so if it's not perfect, it's not going to be a glaring difference.

Off the top of my head, I'd look at "soft iron grey", which is a flat. The frustrating thing is that their colors in those greys run from flat to gloss.
