New Tariffs on India.

Trump just announced that the new Tariffs on products coming from India to the USA will be 26%. All of his new Tariffs are about 1/2 of what each country charges us.

The tariff on imported Harley Davidson motorcycles in India has recently been reduced.
These changes indicate a significant shift in the import regulations for Harley Davidson motorcycles in India.

These Tariffs are more to get countries to the bargaining table and to make all Tariffs reciprocal. You charge us 0, we'll charge you 0. What's fair is fair.

Here is just a few of the new proposed tariffs.

Math is not my strong point either!
But I think I could guess why Harley's don't sell well in India.
When a country buys more than it sells it has a a problem so it demands others consume more to compensate?
We shall see how well this works out.

As of last night the duty threshold was still USD 800 for private personal purchases. Below that there is none.

Above that threshold duty is applied but only on the amount above USD 800

This is only for an individuals personal retail purchases not for resellers, commercial, business and industrial entities. There's different rules for those catagories.

With all the news about tarrifs and whatnot, the rules for us individuals may or may not change. We'll have to monitor the US Customs website for policy changes that would apply as they may or may not occur.

I wonder if all of this is going to affect Ebay purchases from India. I ordered some parts a few weeks ago thinking things might get weird. The last one was a touring seat. Everything else shipped quickly except for the seat... the seller didn't ship until the window passed and I had to get Ebay involved. In the meantime, I was shopping other seats, and now a window pops up from Ebay saying that "they're monitoring the tariff situation, but shipping times may be extended, import duties might be charged" etc.

As previously stated, I was headlong into China Bikes the first time around for tariffs, and we saw no impact on prices for either parts or whole bikes. This is all poker table strategery. I'm not worried. Even if there is a short-term effect, I can wait it out for a set of mirrors.

I just saw a list of all the countries involved in the current tariff negotiations. India is actively talking with the US and sounds like they are not far from an agreement. It will probably blow over in short order.
China is digging in. I expect their stuff will wind up being expensive, which I frankly think is long overdue.

I'm glad I no longer have a Harley, I don't like Jack Daniels or Jim Bean, I drink Single malt Scotch, and sometimes Jamesons or Bushmills. Here at Fatal Hall we drink Australian red wines, and New Zealand sauvignon blanc, so no Californian wine for us. I think the UK have a trade deal with India so no change for there..
Mr Trumps tariffs will affect the cost of UK cars to USA by 25%, Jaguar/Land Rover, Bentley and Rolls Royce may find things difficult, I wonder how Triumph will be affected?
I assume this is an American owned/run website, will the rest of us be subject to any sanctions or tariffs? :D

It seems to me that more than one has not understood how reciprocal tariffs work.
When they say that Europe is going to pay 40% tariffs (or whatever) they do not mean that Europe is going to pay nothing. It is not true.
Europeans and the rest of the world (except US citizens) are going to pay the same as they were paying before for products. If a bottle of champagne cost 10 euros before, the price will remain the same and the French company that sells it will obtain the same profit.
However, when that bottle arrives in the U.S. they will add 4 euros to the price and the Americans who want to buy it will pay it.
So those tariffs will be paid only by US citizens.
The objective is that when an American citizen goes to buy that bottle, he/she will see that it is very expensive and will decide to buy a bottle of champagne made in the USA.
I have also read that a second objective is to lower the dollar so that it will be easier for them to export their products, although obviously when an American travels to another country everything will be more expensive for him.
It will affect some European companies because they will sell less products in the U.S. but these companies will not pay a cent out of their pocket.

British car sales in the USA aren't significant. Aside from MINI (and I think the ones we get are built in Germany?), Range Rover and Jaguar customers will just pay the extra for their unreliable status symbols.
I don't know what tariffs will apply to Triumph bikes since they are almost all made in Thailand now.

Thai seafood destined for the US is already coming through Oz to take advantage of our lower tariff rate so the bikes will probably find a way of using a 10% country too..
And given that American bike, er, manufacturers use a large proportion of imported parts from countries which now have up to 52% tariff rate there is a decent chance their costs are going to increase as much as fully imported bikes.

JLR export over 100,000 cars to the US annually, about 25% of their total production, so for them, and more importantly their employees, it is significant. (I agree with your sentiment though, JLR’s products are utter cr@p, and I’ve no idea why anyone would buy (or more likely rent) one)
Mini’s for the US are manufactured in Oxford, UK, unless electric which iirc is China.
