Oh Deer...

.. and you were probably wanting to pass that slow moving truck at the time but then you saw the bear and missed your chance, ;)

Saw my first local to me coming home last week. It was side of the road right at my drive way to home. Juvenile, about 150lbs. They got re-introduced to a federal park about 70 miles from me about 20yrs ago and are just now making it south west to my area.
Exactly!: I was wondering WTF the driver was slowing way down for, and was certainly thinking about going around. The video frame stretches things way out -- it was all happening a lot closer than it looks.

I've only seen a bear in the wild once in my life. When we lived in Palmyra she was spotted several times on the east side of town. I saw her trotting through a previously harvested corn field about 1/2 mile from my house.

2 years ago visiting my brother in law in Western PA. Big bear came right up to the house, we never heard him. Until he rattled the bird feeder mounted to the window. Heck the dog didn't even hear him or smell him. It was really weird and scary.

Went for a ride two days ago. It's not really appropriate for this forum, because I was on my other, i.e., non-RE, 350 at the time (my C 400 GT scooter).

Well, in any case, here's where I went:

And here are my deer encounters during that ride (and once again, middle of the freakin day, you won't catch me out at dawn or dusk or nighttime, etc.):

Bloomer Rd. (Tannersville, NY) (Deer at 0:46) (3 min.):

Greene County (NY) Rt. 20 (Deer @ 7:36 & 7:52) (9 min.)

I saw the F9 video and then - saw this here. Wasn't on my RE C350 but taking an adventure ride on Skyline Drive (part of the Blue Ridge Parkway). Had my new bike (Tiger 900 Rally Pro) for 5 whole days and thought the windy roads and low speed limits would be good for the break-in. Didn't see the deer until she moved (looking ahead for the next twisty). Didn't go down but the camera was knocked off the mount. Good to have the footage and the insurance company fully agreed that only (mostly?) the deer was at fault. Outrageously expensive parts on order - then outrageous labor charges to fix. Insurance suggested the dealer fix and I'm inclined to agree so that if something was missed, it should theoretically be easier to advocate coverage... After the estimate, I've been riding without the front "beak." I have to say, the design is good because the wind buffeting is so much more noticeable without it. Like Ryan F9, I plan to ramp up my venison dining! Movie: https://photos.app.goo.gl/rKvnM6WLxpn26eJf9

Good documentation. Glad you’re okay.

No deer, but during a ride yesterday (sorry, on my C 400 GT scooter, not on my M350) in the wilds of NY (and then VT and MA) ...

... I had to duck down to the right, to make sure I avoided a large, low-flying, object -- possibly a turkey buzzard (at 00:33):

Similar experienceon a desolate county road in a 94' Mustang GT doing 85+ mph, with the top down. A large turkey buzzard feasting on roadkill along side the road and concealed by tall brush took flight in the wrong direction 7 car-lengths before I passed. Embedded in my memory as aslow motion disaster flick that within 2 agonizingly slow wing flaps moved its center mass first slightly above the front grill and then just bearly over windshield frame with the accompaning soundtrack of screeching brakes.

Glancing at the review view mirror while ducking down to avoid a face full of glass, feathers, and what was certain to be a indeterminate volume roadkill filled guts, the vortex spun the bird like top before righting itself and flying off to find less disrupting dining opportunities. As for the lessons learned, my next transits through the area was at slightly lower speeds with the top up!

Deer are scary! I'm glad my deer risk is fairly low (red squirrels, however, might be small - but they're just stupid!)
Think my worst animal experience was when I had a crotch rocket. Making *exceptionally* good progress on a straight bit of road, I recall seeing a black dot swinging across the carriageway ahead of me. I remember thinking 'crow' and not worrying - it'd be a good 400 yards away and was already airborne - when it very, very rapidly got much bigger and impacted my visor just above my left eye. It exploded with a noise like a shotgun and totally obscured vision on that side.
Pulling over and looking at the residue, I figured out I'd collected a bumble bee. Naturally, riding a sports bike meant I had nothing that'd help clear the mess off the visor - wiping it on my jeans really didn't help matters!
Solution: Carry wipes. Or just don't go everywhere at light speed ;-)
