Hi again, As some of you know l was having problems starting this (500 Electra) bike. Got that sorted now (adjusted the push rods, No compression) and the bike fires up but only as you release the start button

Any way after we hade the bike running for 3 or 4 mins then the Regulator/Rectifier unit started smoking badly so we quickly turned the bike off :(

Any idea what would cause this to happen ?

Electra 500, pushrods... sounds like an AVL Lean Burn Bullet/ Electra X. Great bikes, lucky you !

Well travelled
#1 on the earth issue.
Sometimes the heat in the R/R travels down the wires to the connector blocks and dries out the blades/ sockets and they burn out.and there is a bad connection.
Some R/Rs actually have the blades on the unit themselves to help the process along !
Solution is to go to the guy who sells what he calls Mosfet R/Rs, which run cooler, he usually supplies a bit over capacity , and a harness that goes straight to the battery terminals, not through the bikes harness.
Some bikes come with stock flat connectors all in the same block, and both sides of your connectors may be damaged - I just cut them all off and join the separate wires with Posiloks sealed with self adhesive heat shrink.
Eastern Beaver's site has the Posilok 101.
Are you using the valve lifter when you are starting? if not you might want to have a solenoid and spragg clutch on standby too- DAHIK
