Safety In Argentina

As I mentioned in this post, safety, or to use the literal Spanish translation, security, is a big concern for us riders. Many areas and motorways/freeways are now off-limits to us because they are considered 'tierra de nadie' - no man's land - where armed, drugged-up assholes on stolen bikes, always two up, roam in search of prey.
I won't go into further details, but suffice to say that since my last post on this subject, dozens of riders have been intercepted at gunpoint, separated from their bikes, riding gear and helmets, not to mention phones and other personal items, leaving them 'en pelotas' - with their balls hanging out.
We still ride though, but under different conditions - leave early, return early, stay in a group if you can, definitely returning long before sundown.
Apart from all that, life in Buenos Aires is a blast!

What's the law there regarding concealed carry of a legally owned firearm? If I lived there and it was as bad as you say I'd be looking to buy a handgun. I'm glad I live where I do, which is just as well because we're not allowed handguns, or allowed to openly carry a firearm in a public place.

To be honest, I don't know the gun laws as I've never been interested in weapons. The thugs usually have .22 illegal guns from what I can gather.
I believe the gun laws are quite strict, but frankly I wouldn't want to end up in shooting match with these bastards because for them, life is cheap.

I've read several of your posts regarding safety in your country. In Mexico self-defense forces are located at the entrance and exit of towns to identify potential problems before they occur. Sounds to me like you need a few dozen of these thugs to "go away" by whatever means necessary. I'll bet you and your friends could find former military or police or even outlaw M/C clubs to "help" said thugs to "go away" permanently. Va com Deus, good luck.

Two questions can you recommend a dealership for a service. You can see me saga in the tech section under Service problem. Secondly my wife and I are travelling in Argentina heading for Buenos Aires for the afor mentioned service. What advice can you give us on safety in the city and other areas? Thanks

As for safety, if you're coming from Salta, you'll probably come to BA on R8 or R9, in which case, avoid riding at night.
My apoligies for not replying sooner we had some things we had to do and then I got locked out of this site. Thankfully all is sorted out now. Thanks for the safety advice, we never travel at night. We try to plan our days to end no later than 5pm. We have done this since our first big trip in Baja California where the cows and donkeys sleep on the nice warm tarmac. We had Pilar fix the bike. Salta had changed the mapping and the valves were set incorrectly. It is running great again. We are presently in Tucuman and will take 40 to Mendoza and then back to B.A. to meet some friends. We then will go to S. Brazil which was our plan before the detour. We should be back in B.A. in late Sept. Maybe we could meet for coffee?. After that we will head south to the Patagonia area letting the weather dictate the pace. Any advice or tips would be very welcome. Thanks Fran.

We're travelling in the UK at the moment and won't be back until mid Sept, but yes, please get in touch when you can later in the month.
You need to be very careful coming into BA either by day or night, so PM me for further advice.

This is the reality which continues to this day. On the other hand, many of the BMWs and Ducatis are seen as trophies to these delinquent bastards and sometimes burn them for the hell of it.
The Himalayan is not considered a trophy, but I'm not banking on that.
Video is in Spanish.

This is still a problem where these bastards are going for powerful bikes and this lady was shot three times only recently but managed to escape at 180kmh and take refuge in a petrol station. She still has one bullet left to be removed, but she was lucky.
I know this route very well, but am surprised that it happens on this stretch because it's so busy. Anyway, since it's in Spanish I can say that she was told by the woman presenter to sell he bike, but quite rightly Bibiana replied that she never will because it's her passion.
Nothing is being done about this, seemingly, but something should because we only go out in groups on weekends.
