It’s a tachometer - uses a wire to transmit the engine’s revolutions per minute from the ignition system to the gauge - so completely self-contained, no outside inputs needed.
It runs directly from the bike

I installed the kit from @nissbird on my Meteor 350 about a month and a half ago, and the instructions -- I just took a look at them -- for the 650s are very similar.

My only fear is that there will be no kits when I finally crack and buy a ShotGun.
I have streamlined the making of my tachometers, meaning any version can be supplied to a customer within 2/3 days for the foreseeable future.
These versions so far are:
Classic 350
Bullet 350
Hunter 350
Scram 411
Super Meter 650
Shot Gun 650.
