Speedometer

Very simple. Just follow the tube that is clipped with the rear brake line on the swing arm. That's that sensor :)
Here is an illustration (BTW - You do not need to remove the wheel)
The picture is just to show you where it is.
And remember, there is one for the front wheel too
Excellent, I will do that today. Many thanks!

Went out for a ride today, and sure enough the sticky speedo came back. This is after cleaning the speedometer socket and the speed sensors, both of which have been mentioned here as possible culprits. So I rode over to the dealer and showed them, and they seemed to indicate it was a known problem. The fix, according to them, is a new speedo, which they have ordered and expect to receive in a week or two. I will report back after the new speedo is installed and I have ridden it for awhile.

Well, it took about two weeks to receive the new speedometer, but the dealership called me to say it was in last week and on Saturday they installed it. I rode it home about 15 miles and it didn't act up, so only time will tell if this unit will be good or not.

Two things to be aware of:
1) I noted that the code that shows when you initially start the bike is now 12701, before it was 12601, which I believe all Classic 350's display on start up. So I am hopeful this is a true countermeasure unit which may have corrected the problem.
2) The new speedometer means that the odometer is reset. I had 860 miles on it before the switch, but the new speedometer has reset it to zero miles. I kept a copy of the repair order so I can explain that to the next owner.

I will report back in a week or two after I have had a chance to ride it for an extended period to see if it acts up.

Update:
Same experience as above, with slightly different details.

After a 2 hour ride in 80 degree heat last week, my problem returned as well. So the dealership swapped out my speedo for me. Only down side is the odometer reset and needing to keep another piece of paperwork in case I sell the bike.

Definitely heat related as it worked for most of a month just fine while the weather was cooler and overcast.

Had the same issue. Dealership said RE had never heard of such a thing. Got the dealership to believe me when the speedo was sitting at over 70 mph with the engine off. Worse in warmer weather.

RE finally agreed there was an issue, sent a new speedo. We'll see.

RE knows this is an issue. My dealership tried to tell me it wasn't very common, 'only like 1 in 5 or 10 bikes tops'. I reminded them that 4% failure is QC standard in most industries and so their 'not much' is only 2 to 4 times what it should be.

When I got mine replaced that same guy I spoke to earlier admitted that RE ships the same part they use in production, so there's a 10-20% chance that this one will fail too. I told him I appreciated his honestly this time.

Dropped by the dealership this morning (my check engine light was on), service guy said RE is considering a recall.

That would seem to be an obvious next step.
My service manager and I have both felt it should have been a recall long ago. A recall means the dealership gets sent x number of parts depending on unit sales, it's a walk in and walk out 15 minute job. File the form and get sent replacement stock, tech gets 30 minutes (minimum increment in my state) billable work.
Currently it is a warranty issue which means they have to process the bike in, confirm the claim, start the paperwork, wait for the part to come in... It's like 3 times the paperwork, twice the shop rate (30 minutes billed to check it out, 30 billed for the repair) and takes forever from the customer's point of view. A recall would be the best thing for everyone in the long run.

Man, so RE is screwing both their dealerships and their riders by not declaring a recall. Bad move, folks.

When I showed the guys at the dealership that my speedo said I was doing 80, with the engine off and the key out, I commented that the only way I'd get Flea up to 80 mph was if I rode her off a cliff.

And screwing themselves too, they end up paying that extra shop rate to the dealership as warranty work. Everyone from top to bottom are losing here, but I guess the word 'recall' has reliability connotations for some markets or something because RE has been dragging their feet on it. Or maybe someone high in corporate gets a bonus if they post no recalls and so they're milking it as long as they can? I've seen dumber stuff in executive contracts.

Add me as the next guy with a wonky speedo.
Im pushing 14k miles on my machine and lately the speedo seems a little "sticky".
BTW - That's how many miles my rear brakes lasted. Just changed them today. I wore them down pretty thin :) And I tend to use the rear brake quite a bit more than I probably should.....sometimes I use it exclusively if its short stop and go traffic or a low speed stop

Hi,

Update on my classic 350 speedo !
After having it repaced last year under warranty I went out for a ride yesterday when the temperature was around 24 C and hey presto my new speedo got stuck reading around 20 mph, did the usual turing the ignition on and off until it reset to zero, back to the dealer or has anybody found a reliable fix for this issue ? ride safely, Martyn

RE better figure out real fast that the USA market isn't like the Indian market.
If they build a bad rep here state side they will be done as fast as they came.
