Just for consideration the larger 140/70R18 rear tire would have a similar but lesser effect to changing to a 16T front sprocket, about half as much. I.e. baseline if you are going 60mph at 4000rpm in 6th gear the larger rear tire will have you going 62mph whereas the 16T sprocket will get you to 64mph.

BT46s haven't been on the market all that long, could his Bonneville had BT45s?
Very possibly. I'm not up on tires these days. But on the other hand, I remember putting Dunlop K81s on my '75 CB750F and being amazed at how much better they were than the stock '70s Japanese tires.

I put the original size BT46s on today. Only 70 miles or so on the way home and they feel good. No big jump in confidence such as when I went from the CEATs to the Pirellis but that indicates to me the BT46s are good as I loved the Pirellis. I trust the BT46s wear a little better. It was the only thing wrong with the Pirellis.

Add, when I say I, I mean the dealership. The tech does a really thorough job in fitting and balancing and worth what I pay.

I traded my Ceats for a pair of Avon MK II Road Riders and it totally transformed my traction and handling. Iv'e had Avons on my old BSA A65 for years and been very happy with them. They have long wearing rubber in the center and progressively softer grippier rubber as you roll to the outside. Best of both worlds.
