Gathering speed -- Trust the machine

I'm not sure the LED bulb will help. They generate a LOT of heat and the micro cooling fan on my bulb blows that heat onto the bottom of the speedo! I got the insane speedo on a day so cold I was running an electric jacket liner. (I may have to switch back to the halogen this summer.) The...

Armored clothes yea or nay ?

The last time I even as much as tipped over in the driveway was in 1986. The only crash I've experienced was in 1972. This strategy has worked for me.

WHAT IS EURO 5+, AND WILL IT KILL OUR FAVOURITE BIKES?

Monitor my Classic 350 cat as much as you like... it's sitting on a shelf. Two of my older bikes have no emission equipment at all, just glorious 1960s technology. As for carbon dioxide, in the last 300 years we've apparently raised it from 0.03% to 0.04% of the atmosphere. If the green fascists...

What have you done to your Classic today

When I was a teen I actually bent Honda 90 fork tube straight using a jack post, hydraulic jack, and the carry timber of my childhood home. By carefully trying to lift the entire house with the fork tube the tube bent first. Not exactly precision but this was a Honda Trail 90.

What have you done to your Classic today

Noticed something interesting on that e-bay page: the Classic 350 speedometer sells for $88! I assume this is the same unit some of us have swapped out multiple times under warranty. (I wonder how many I would have to buy before I got a unit that doesn't go insane in hot weather.)

RE spring kit for 350 classic

Putting the whole seat/spring/bracket together the first time was a major pain. I've since removed the seat once to adjust the valve clearance. To remove the seat: I remove the two bolts that hold the brackets to the frame. (I used hex head bolts so I can fish them out with a ratcheting box...

Did Royal Enfield open a can of worms and do the buying public a favor?

My Honda Valkyrie has old fashioned screw tappets; 27 years and 65,000 miles and they've never been looked at. Ran into a mechanic who was at 135,000 miles. Never had looked at his. Most people just check the compression every 50,000 miles. Not too bad for Japanese quality manufactured in...

One question though... what is the source of the muffler? I like how it uses the stock heat shields.

What have you done to your Classic today

The Dunlop tires TT100 tires look like the venerable K81s I ran in the 1970s. The hot setup then was to get the English-made vs. the Japanese tires. My CB750 ate those tires in 2,000 miles, they should last longer on a Classic. The Mach III bars gave me cold sweats just looking at them. I...

    Riding in your old age

In 1977 I rode a Honda 550 with my young brother from New Hampshire to San Diego and back, 13,000 miles in 5 weeks. The crazy part is the Honda already had 40,000 miles on it with low compression. Climbing Independent Pass in Colorado (12,095 feet) we was reduced to 10 mph full throttle in first...

Classic 500 - LED headlight upgrade without ruining the retro look

Looks great! I wonder what it would take to mount the Holley Retrobright on my 350 Classic Reborn? I'd go and measure the OEM headlight but my RE is in the deep freeze in the back of my garage.

A few questions about the new Classic 350s

The speedo problem is a warping of the dial in the hot sun. In NH we've got maybe 2 weeks each year where it is hot enough for the problem. (I should be riding the Valkyrie in July anyway.) I'm inclined to ignore it. My dealer says a redesigned speedo is coming.

A few questions about the new Classic 350s

I came to the same conclusion on a 220 mile ride into NH's White Mountains. If I could only keep one... The 350 Classic the slowest damned bike I've owned in 55 years of riding but it is the most fun since the 1962 Honda Cub 50 I fixed up and foolishly sold for $50 back in the day.

Battery Tenders for the Winter Months?

No. I do too. I simply charge them in April and put them back in. The exception is my scooter. It has a lithium battery that will lose about 1% of its charge over 6 months.

    Not Oiling the Chain

The shop manual for my 1967 Honda 305 scrambler recommended that the chain be boiled in a fryolator filled with melted Vaseline and motor oil. Boy, was my mother pissed off! I do little to nothing to maintain modern chains. I just replace the chain and sprockets as a set every 20,000 miles.

    heated jacket and gloves

The 154 watts is from the RE Factory Shop Manual. My KLR has lower output and needs 5,000 rpm to manage even that. And I run electric gear. The thing to remember is that a thermostat will cut the draw. I run full power on the highway and turn it down around town. Usually I'll turn off the heated...

    heated jacket and gloves

My Classic runs my heated jacket liner and glove liners without a problem. But I haven't run into weather where I run them above medium heat. An LED headlight will free up a lot of power. I used this approach on my Kawasaki KLR that has a weak alternator, going from 60 watts to 10.

    Classic 350 speedo problem

The problem according to my RE dealer is the speedo housing warps in hot weather. He said the new ones he installed have done the same thing but there is a redesigned unit available. I may have it replaced next year, but in my cold climate it's a problem two weeks a year. So I'm inclined to...

    Hitchcock's top 10 mods

Bar-end mirrors mean I'm not looking at my shoulders. The bar-end mirrors are rock steady, offer a good view, and fit the 1940s look. The stock lollipops are ugly. I installed the decat pipe and the DNA filter using the stock snorkel cover. I see no need for further powerplant changes.
