Preload Adjustment - What's the Knack?

Today I was looking at the rear shock preload adjustment. I have a C spanner that fits nicely but there is no room to use it from either side of the bike. Either the exhaust or suspension links get in the way. It looks as though the rear wheel needs to be removed. Is that the case or am I missing something?

Of course 🤦‍♂️ Bleedin' obvious really.

In my defence I had just come back from a very hot ride on some local trails so the old brain wasn't working so well 😎

Thank you. A job for tomorrow now.

It can be done without removing the link. I reduce preload from the right side, increase from left. You have to hold the wrench at a slight angle. An extension on the wrench helps.
