Variable idle

So I have a 2021 model and have had the issues of it dying multiple times when first being started. I did try adjusting the TPS and also idle screw without much success. I have only 800 miles on it and the idle will be all over the place and not consistent at all. When first started it will be 1250-1500 then after riding it will be over 2000 at idle. But there seems to be no consistent pattern to the idle. It will still die and has to be ridden for about 10 minutes to not die once coming to a stop (with idle RMPs over 2000). I took it to the dealer and they haven't been able to find anything, right now they have the ECU sent off to RE so they can reflash it. Anyone have any idea what could be going on?

All I can do is list the things the RE will check, none of which are a proven method to fix it.

  • TPS Setting
  • Idle Screw Adjustment
  • Kinked Evap Hoses
  • Faulty Relays
  • Stuck TB
  • Debris in Tank
  • Faulty ECU

Thanks! I did adjust the TPS to a couple different settings along with the idle screw. I checked the Evap hoses but I do wonder about just doing an EVAP delete, now I know RE won't do that for compliance reasons. I did replace the relays and the dealer did replace the TB. So hopefully it will be the ECU as there is no lemon law for motorcycles in my state so I could be screwed if it doesn't get fixed.

Hi there,
In the Summer 2021 to late fall, it seemed like there was a bump in stubborn issues. The settings he used #editied# in the video below seems to have worked well for these bikes.
Your secondary issue of an idle which randomly changes from 1250-1500 and then switches to 2000 was something reported and seemed a subgroup within the larger group. I believe one person reported the fix involving their O2 sensor, but I didn't really understand the full issue. For several others, the dealer replaced the throttle body assembly which resolved the issue. The throttle body assembly includes the TPS, I believe an mass air flow sensor, and the idle adjust circuit. Who knows what was exactly to blame, but the TBA is kinda pricey so covering it under warranty would be a good thing.
I am recommend taking it to a dealer who is familiar with the issue if possible and making sure the dealer knows that the issue of cold starting and warm up stability should be resolved along with the idle oscillations before calling it fixed. Be prepared to test it before heading off and hopefully they've verified everything from completely cold just to save you and them some time/effort. I suspect you may fall into the throttle body replacement crowd if resetting all the settings and checking all connections/hoses turns up nothing. Good luck, I would love to know how it turns out.

Has the OP replaced the factory spark plug with an Iridium yet? This eliminated most my own start-up problems.

recommended: NGK CR8EIX (4218)

Edit: just a note, I had to remove the resistor cap on the boot side of plug
